Leesa Nicholls has been working with clay for 15 years, and more recently with individual companion dogs as her subjects. Her approach is to spend time alone with the animal, enabling her to get a sense of their spirit and personality, and allow the natural pose to emerge. She works with fast-drying clay, provoking a sense of immediacy and energy of the moment she captures. The clay sculpture can form the final work, or a further step can be made in creating a bronze cast. The strength of the bronze cast, combined with the energetic style of sculpture, echoes both the transient nature of the relationship between human and animal, and the permanent mark they leave on our lives.
